About
Wendy has extensive experience in education as a school director, consultant and teacher in both public and private settings. Her classroom experience spans a broad range of age and ability levels, learning styles and content areas. Throughout her years in education, Wendy has developed and modeled innovative, integrated curriculum that is meaningful for children and engages them actively with their learning.
Wendy founded and directed a small private school in North Carolina committed to outdoor curricula where she taught and trained teachers for 14 years. Her work in education includes developing project-based curriculum, creating policies for sustainable classroom and school practices and organizational leadership.
Wendy recently completed the first phase of a collaborative project documenting outdoor learning for the North Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children (NCaeyc). This is a photo documentation project that combines her skills in observation, photography, writing and graphic design with her knowledge of child development and curriculum.
Wendy is a member of the North Carolina Outdoor Learning Environments Alliance. NC-OLE's mission is to improve the quality of outdoor environments and experiences for children throughout North Carolina. Wendy serves on the Alliance's Professional Development Committee supporting teacher education and practice in the field.
An accomplished photographer, Wendy is involved in numerous photo documentation projects. A number of her photos of children, their experiences and their learning presently appear in A Place to Play, recently published by The University of Michigan Press (press.umich.edu)
In addition to her consultative and training work, Wendy is currently co-writing two books; one on implementing national early childhood standards in the out-of-doors and one on arts integration in the elementary classroom. In addition, she is engaged in local initiatives to provide environmental education experiences for children of all ages as well as doing freelance photography work for individuals and organizations.
